Toni- Service Manager
I joined PHS Compliance as PAT Engineer in March 2014 via an agency and then went on to become a full-time employee in October of that year. Spending most of my working life prior to my appointment at PHS, working for a family run business in the food sector, based in one location joining PHS was a completely new experience for me.
The idea of being able to travel to multiple sites and meeting new people really appealed to me. There is also the added bonus of being issued a company vehicle to travel to and from sites eliminating any travel costs that I had previously had to pay out of pocket. The pay structure is set up well, and you can earn additional money whilst still within your allocated working hours, alleviating the need to do overtime thus improving my work life balance. There is also scope to work overtime on top of this so it really is a win-win situation. This is the 1st job I have come across where your pay matches the hard work you put in.
In my time as a PAT engineer, I carried out testing on a wide range of customers sites ranging from park restrooms to football stadiums and everything in between. My 2 standout locations to test were Westminster Abbey and No10 Downing Street. Not many people get to see the internal workings of these sites, but I was lucky enough to experience this whilst getting paid. Whilst being employed as a PAT Engineer I was also trained on how to carry out Emergency Light Testing, adding another string to bow as they say.
There are any many challenges that you face as an engineer but with each scenario you learn something new. You also learn to adapt to the needs of an individual on this job, a skill that I have also transferred into my personal life.
There is also scope to progress into other departments within PHS. Just recently 2 of my engineers have transferred to our Medical Calibration team and one of my engineers has joined up with our Fire team, allowing them to further their careers.
In 2022 after 8 years as an engineer (my choice) I was promoted to a Service Manager position. Undertaking this role really opened my eyes to the good that the business does and how much they do care about their employees.
Having the experience in the role of PAT engineer I knew I would be able to fully support the engineers in their roles and provide relevant support where needed. My transition was seamless, and I was given all the training and support I needed by my line manager and supporting team, to ensure I had the tools to make my tenure a success. The wider business also provided me with an in-house management course which helped me immensely with my adjustment into management.
Overall PHS is great place to work providing you apply yourself and have a willingness to adapt. I have been here the best part of 10 years and hope to continue with PHS for many more years.
Lindsey – Planning Team Leader.
I have worked for PHS Compliance for just over 6 years. I started within the planning team, planning for the Gas service line. Spending 15 years in hospitality as an Assistant Manager and then a Head Chef, joining an office based team was a massive shock to the system and completely different to what I was used to. Being part of a planning team and not leading a team was something that took some getting used to but making that move is something that I certainly don’t regret.
I spent 6 months planning for the Gas side of the business and then moved over to the Estimating Team. Here I put electrical quotes together off the back of our testing reports. This was a fascinating role and the knowledge I gained from this role was amazing. Every day was a school day and has given me a basic electrical knowledge that I can now use to help the team I lead. Since early 2024 I have been leading the Mechanical and Electrical team at Compliance and look after a team of 6 covering 5 service lines.
Whilst I struggled all those years ago with my new working environment, I certainly would never change it for the world. To have every weekend, bank holiday and Christmas off is a massive bonus for me. Working every Christmas day and all those special occasions in between for 15 years, it really does make you appreciate the flexibility that comes with an office role.
Apart from the office hours, what I really like about working for PHS is the investment PHS are willing to put into their employees. Since working at Compliance, I have completed a Management and Leadership apprenticeship, I am currently on the Leap programme and there are so many ULearn courses to access.
Not only that, the rewards, discounts and incentives that are run are brilliant. There is something for everyone on the discounts app including discounts from your weekly food shop. I recently took part in the PHS euro’s incentive and won £500 at random just for taking part. There is always something happening and if you choose to do something for charity PHS will match your fundraising up to £500 another investment and push of encouragement from PHS.
